CQU Multicultural Fair + Open Day

My family and I went to the CQU Multicultural Fair and open day in Rockhampton today. Everyone (in my family that is) reckons that this years’ open day it was the best.

What did I do? Well, I found a free internet cafe in building 19, looked with adoration at the many web design books in the library, ate some Indian food such as curry and pakoras for lunch, viewed an Australian citizenship ceremony and looked on with mild interest at a four man band from the Andes in South America. Of course, those are just the main things that I did. Below are some photos that I took.

Roadworks are getting closer and closer to Me

The roadworks are coming closer and closer to our place, because the council has re-tarred and widened the existing road up to the point where it is supposed to change course. At the moment, the road comes down from the north then turns to the left. The new road will continue straight ahead. See the photo below to find out what I mean.

The photos below show the new tar and enhancements to the road. I dirtied my fingers a bit because the tar covering at the edge of the roads is so soft that I can make fingerprints in it (see the top-right corner of the close-up photo).

Grassfire!

The first I knew that there was a fire going was when my mum called out from the back garden, where there is a clear view across the intersection. We all rushed to the lounge-room window, and as soon as I saw how big the fire was I ran outside and hopped on my bike. Below is a photo of the fire (looking from the road in just up from our place) after it had burnt about half of the paddock.

Riding closer, I could see two men trying to contain the fire by smothering it with their shirts. They were doing a fairly good job of it, although they were only concentrating on the left side of the paddock, although the fire was heading towards the right.

Grassfire 2

About 3 minutes after I arrived a grader from the road-works (I think that was where it came from) arrived and started to build a firebreak up the left side of the fire It soon reversed, however, as I think that the fire was too hot. After a while the Bungundarra rural fire brigade arrived. There wasn’t much for him to do, so he drove up to where the two men who were at the fire first were standing. Below are a few photos of the grader and rural fire brigade.

Once the fire had died down a bit, I rode up on Bungundarra road to see how far the fire had reached. The fire had stopped at the edge of the paddock, probably because the grader had created a firebreak along the boundary. Riding back, I almost ran over a snake that was crossing the road. About 15 metres on I saw another snake by the side of the road, this time a baby yellow one.

In conclusion, I think that the tractor (which was bailing hay in the paddock to left of the one that caught fire) started the fire somehow. My dad agrees with me on this. It’s just a good thing that the grader came along or the fire might have leaped into the next paddock and so on.

Baby Rats Sold

Yesterday we drove into Rocky to pick up some furniture for my sister and to sell the rest of the baby rats (we had 10 to sell).

First of all we went to the big pet store in the Redhill shopping centre, where my sisters asked if they wanted any rats. It turned out they wanted all of the female rats (there were 7 of them) which they were willing to pay $2 each for. The rats had just been installed in their new cages when the girl working there had to ring her boss for some reason. The boss then said that he only wanted to pay $1.50 per rat, which meant that instead of receiving $14 dollars they would only receive $10.50. My sisters sold them anyway.

We then went to the Aussie Tender Centre to pick up the piece of furniture.

After picking the furniture up we drove down to another pet place that we knew of called Webby’s Pet and Grain Barn. Because we weren’t sure if they sold rats or not, one of my sisters ran in to ask. They did sell rats, so we all walked in. I went around taking photos of all the beautiful birds that they sell. Anyway, the owner of the pet barn was very nice and gave the girls the full $3 that they wanted for each rat. He also said that most of the pet-shops will rip you off when buying baby rats. For example, the first pet-shop that we went to only payed $1.50 for the rats, then sold them for $5.00.

All in all, it was a good trip into Rocky. Below is a photo of the Webby’s pet barn sign.
