Well if you haven’t noticed YeppoonInfo.com now has a brand new design & website, which I think is much better than the old one. The new design has a much more “traditional” look and feel, compared to the very ordinary blog style design that the previous website had. Before I go any further, please have a look at the screenshot below and visit the site!

This new site includes a totally different structure, for example along the top just above the random header image display (which showcases panoramas around the Yeppoon region), there is a places menu listing all the localities in this area. Above that menu are the resource links, which currently include the Yeppoon Events, Yeppoon Photo Panoramas and Yeppoon Accommodation pages. Later on as soon as I can code it, I hope to add a Yeppoon News page which people can subscribe to via email or RSS.

If you have any other suggestions of what to add or what I can change, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Well today I was very excited to read that Google has launched its street view service, which allows people to view streets as if they’re walking or driving up them, has been launched in Australia. This includes Yeppoon, so I spent some time looking around at all the street view locations. It seems that most of Australia’s medium to large towns and cities are covered, along with major highways. If you go to this address, you can see which parts of Australia are covered.

To see a street view, just go to Google Maps Australia and click the street view tab in the top right corner. If there is street view available in that area the streets will appear outlined in blue. To look at the street using street view, just double click the blue outline.

I’m not sure whether any of you have noticed yet, but I have a new website and blog up at jylanwynne.com. Basically I’ve decided to change Jylanization into a blog entirely about Yeppoon and my area, and use jylanwynne.com as a personal blog with web design posts and things like that (phew, over and done with!). That means I’ll be able to tweak each website until they’ve reached their full potential, which I can’t do at the moment.

I have some cool things planned for each blog, so make sure you come by often!

Now, about subscribers and what you can do. I’ve made a list below showing your options:

If you want to keep subscribing to both blogs: Do nothing! I’ve already used Yahoo Pipes to merge the two feeds of Jylanization and Jylan Wynne together, so that means everyone subscribed to both blogs (as well as email subscribers) will stay subscribed.

If you want to only subscribe to Jylan Wynne: If you came here just to read about web design stuff, etc, then just unsubscribe from whatever you’re currently getting my posts from, and resubscribe to feeds.feedburner.com/JylanWynne/. Keep in mind however, you won’t get any pretty pictures of Yeppoon to look at .

If you want to only subscribe to Jylanization (or Yeppoon Blogging): Just unsubscribe from the feed you’re currently getting my posts from and resubscribe to feeds.feedburner.com/YeppoonBlogging/. Remember though, I might suddenly move to Borneo and you wouldn’t know!

I hope I’ve covered everything here. I might do a post on how I did the design and everything for jylanwynne.com, but in the meantime go and check it out, then please tell me what you think! I will start right now on changing the branding for Jylanization, see you .

I’m quite excited and pleased at the moment because I just downloaded the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin, which in a nutshell, does the following things:

Creates backups of the WordPress database and the WordPress source files

Downloads the latest copy of WordPress onto the server that WordPress is installed on

Deactivates all plugins, remembering which ones you’ve been using

Overwrites all the old WordPress files with the new files

Activates all your old plugins again

So, in short, if you are running a WordPress blog I recommend that you download the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin immediately. The plugin works on all WordPress installations from version 1.5 upwards.

Yesterday, I launched it at http://www.organicmacadamias.net.au/.

They already had a logo, however the “organics” tagline was written in quite a nasty font. I just replaced it with the same text written in Julius. In addition to the normal static pages, PHP is also used to power the order and contact forms.

Please check it out and leave a comment with your thoughts. And remember, if you want a healthy alternative to commercially grown macadamias sprayed with pesticides and the like, buy some organic macadamias off Nutberry Organics!

Reading the heading above I presume that you’d be thinking that I got great value for money. That is because I did. While reading one of Problogger’s email updates I found out that Darren (Problogger’s owner) was using Printfection.com to print customised t-shirts advertising Problogger.

Because I was looking at alternative ways (outside of the internet) to advertise Jylanization, I was very interested in getting a t-shirt. When I went and had a look at the Printfection website and saw that they were printing white t-shirts for $2, I decided to get one. The main cost was the postage to Australia, but that was still only about $7 so I wasn’t worried.

Today they came in the mail. I was very surprised to find that they had packed 2 t-shirts, but only charged me for one. I thought that it was a mistake, but I then saw that there were some black printing marks on one t-shirt. That was fine however, because they had been very nice and included both t-shirts for the price of 1. Excellent customer service .

The only thing that I was a bit disappointed about was the size of the text on the t-shirt. That was my fault though, because I had underestimated the size of the t-shirt. So, if you want a t-shirt for very good value, head over to Printfection.com and get yours today! The $2 t-shirt offer might even still be on

This shows how it looks with me wearing it. In case you can’t see it, this is looking at my back. It isn’t printed on the front.

The 2 t-shirts face down. The marks on 1 of them can’t be seen because they are on the other side.

It is possible to see a few print marks in this photo, the first is near the bottom left corner while the second is in the middle on the right.

I’ve been finding a few browser tricks and hacks(?) for the Firefox and Camino browsers lately. I have found that Camino has the most usable hacks, although it may be that Firefox has more but I can’t find them. BTW, I have tested these tricks on Firefox 2.5 and Camino 1.0.3 for Mac. I expect most of these tricks will work on Windows computers.

Anyway, the hacks for Camino are listed below.

Holding down the Apple and option key will change the mouse pointer into a hand and allow you to scroll the page around as if it was a pdf.

Typing about:about into the address field will bring you to a list of other about addresses, including ones for looking inside your cache, viewing the Mozilla logo (not what you think), changing just about any browser setting that you could think of (hundreds more than the preferences), viewing the plugins installed and looking at a verse from the Book of Mozilla (fictional I think).

Option-clicking on a link will bring up a save dialog, however the dialog box is missing the options to hide the extension and choose the save format. If you do select OK it will save the page that the link pointed to but without any images or CSS files. Does anyone know what this hack is for?

Shift-clicking on a link will stop that link from loading. I think the only use for this would be to find out what the :active state is for a particular link.

Two more hacks for Firefox only are listed below.

Option-clicking on a link will automatically save that page without bringing up a save dialog.

Only some of the Camino about commands will work in the Firefox browser. These include about:buildconfig, about:cache, about:config, about:credits (takes you to a mozilla page on the net), about:license, about:mozilla and about:plugins.

If you find know or find any more hacks for either Camino or Firefox please let me know and I’ll include them here along with your name and website. I would also appreciate feedback from Windows users. Have fun!

You might notice Jylanization has had a bit of a redesign. Immediately visible is the wider design and new header image, but if you look carefully you can see that I’ve also changed my tagline from “Everything you’d want to know about Jylan Wynne” to “Blogging by a 14 year old living in Yeppoon, QLD, Australia.” I felt that these changes enhanced the usability and attraction of Jylanization. What do you reckon?
