Yesterday when Dad went to the tip in Yeppoon he brought back this old boat that he bought for $25. It was unloaded beside the shed where it lay until this afternoon. In the morning we had used a piece of cork to temporarily plug the round hole at the back of the boat, which is used to empty the boat of water. Anyway, Dad had said that after lunch we’d all try to carry it down to the dam. I didn’t think this would work (Have you ever tried to lift a boat made from fibreglass and wood?) so I looked around for something with wheels that I could slip under the boat.

My eyes immediately fell on the go-kart which was lying around. Once I’d brought the go-kart to the boat, I tipped the boat on its side so I could slide the kart in underneath it. Eventually it settled down fairly well but it was still leaning to one side and I needed someone to hold that side and stop it from tilting. Fortunately my sister came along at that moment and saw what I was doing, so I told her to come and help hold the boat. I then started pulling the go-kart with the boat on top of it down to the dam.

On the way down I picked up my other sisters, and with one on either side and one pushing from behind, we managed to run the boat almost down to the dam’s edge. Then dad appeared and helped us to push it into the water, which went fairly well except the go-kart was almost pushed in too. We then spent the next hour or so playing around on the boat in the dam. One fun thing to do was to attach a few ropes to the hook at the front of the boat and let it drift (with someone in it) to the other side, then run with the rope. The boat could pick up a fairly good speed this way.

Once we’d finished playing in it, we had to drag it up onto the bank so the water could drain out. Overall, I think 25 bucks is a good investment for days of fun!
